This is a leather thimble for sashiko, traditional Japanese quilting. It's worn as a pad on the palm, to support the needle as it is pushed through the fabric. There is an elastic cord on the back that may be adjusted to fit your finger. I highly recommend using one of these!
This leather thimble is the one I take with me when I'm working on sashiko away from home. Once the cord is adjusted to fit, it's very comfortable. I also carry sashiko thimbles in metal for the palm, fingertip, and knuckle.
